How to… Make Your Own Hummus

As a vegetarian, I am constantly searching for sources of protein. Hummus has always been a favourite dish – it’s healthy, filling and portable. I  will often take the snack size Sabra Hummus packages to work with a bag of baby carrots and it’s the perfect afternoon snack!

I once tried to make my own hummus from scratch – and I mean really from scratch. I went to the health food store to buy organic chickpeas which then had to be soaked overnight before I could even start. Being a spontaneous person, I don’t often want to wait a full day before I can devour what I’ve made so I have stuck to store bought hummus ever since.

Until today that is. I recently tried out this hummus from Three Many Cooks and it was so easy! I shoved all the ingredients in Mr. Green (that’s what I call my new lime green mini processor) and let it do its thing. It took 5 minutes in total! I was really happy with the result. This hummus is delicious and has far fewer calories than the average brand you will find at the supermarket. Oh and it’s cheap. Really, really cheap! The smoked paprika for sprinkling is optional but I highly recommend it!

What You Need:

1-2 large garlic cloves
2 cups cooked chickpeas (reserve the cooking liquid)
2 tablespoons tahini
1/4 cup lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
Large pinch of cayenne, more to taste
Salt to taste
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus extra for drizzling
Smoked paprika (optional) for sprinkling

What You Need to Do:

Place garlic cloves in a food processor and mince. Add chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, cumin, cayenne, salt, and 2 tablespoons olive oil; process until pureed. Thin with reserved liquid or water to desired consistency. (Can be covered and refrigerated a week or more.)

When ready to serve, spoon hummus onto a large plate or platter with desired accompaniments. Drizzle hummus with olive oil and sprinkle with optional paprika. Serve and enjoy!

    Looks delicious, I love the addition of the smoked paprika. I’m on a hummus kick lately and I’m still undecided as to weather it’s worth it to go with the dried beans…still experimenting!

      Hi Sue,
      There’s definitely a different texture to hummus when made with dry beans (and soaking them yourself) and using canned. I just can never stand the wait so this type of recipe is brilliant for me! Otherwise, I watch the chickpeas soak just waiting to dig in. I know… I’ve got some serious issues!
